The one accessory that changes the daily experience most. Look for machined aluminum with sharp diamond-cut teeth for consistency and longevity, or wood-topped designs if you care how it looks out on a shelf. A multi-chamber design with a fine screen and a kief catcher is the standard worth paying for; a 2.5-inch diameter is the sweet spot between pocketable and comfortable to turn.
The rolling tray
Any flat surface works; a good tray keeps everything in one place and off your table. Metal trays are cheap, durable, and easy to wipe down. Wood and ceramic trays look better and last for years if you treat them like the homeware they are. The detail that matters: a rolled or raised lip deep enough that nothing escapes, and enough real estate for a grinder, papers, and a lighter at once — roughly the footprint of a hardcover book.
Storage
Flower is produce. It degrades with light, oxygen, and swings in humidity, so the display-worthy answer is also the technically correct one: airtight glass, kept out of direct sun. UV-filtering glass jars solve the light problem outright, and a two-way humidity pack dropped in the jar keeps texture stable for weeks. Skip the fridge — temperature swings and moisture do more harm than good.
One California-specific note worth knowing: keep dispensary products in their sealed, child-resistant packaging in the trunk when you're driving. An open container in the cabin is a citation waiting to happen, the same as with alcohol.
Glass, lighters & care
Good glass is like good cookware — buy once, maintain forever. The maintenance ritual is simple: coarse salt and 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, shake, rinse hot, air dry. Do it regularly and everything tastes the way it's supposed to. Keep a couple of plain lighters in the tray and accept, gracefully, that they will all eventually walk away.
